YouTube has released viewing figures for the most popular Christmas adverts hosted on its platform, revealing which brand has managed to prove the most popular with its seasonal campaign. Globally, John Lewis’s ‘Buster the Boxer’ ad, created by Adam&EveDDB, topped the festive leaderboard globally with over 21 million views, but Sainsbury’s and AMV BBDO‘s ‘The Greatest Gift’ video, while only racking up 13.5 million was found to be the most popular among UK consumers.
“The excitement, buzz and creativity around Christmas adverts shows that this ‘ads as entertainment’ moment is quickly becoming a great British cultural export, much like America’s Superbowl,” David Black, managing director of branding at Google UK, said in a statement. “Not only are users around the world turning to YouTube to watch and engage with the ads, but more and more brands are tapping into this opportunity to share emotional stories.”
The leaderboards were based on an algorithm that includes paid views, organic views and how much of a video people watched.
John Lewis’ ad took second place in the UK chart, while ‘Christmas with love from Mrs Claus’ by Marks & Spencer, RKCR/Y&R and Mindshare came in third with 7.3m views.
